Thirty-Three

Hiding out in the woods bordering Love Place and the targeted duplex, T-Low waited for darkness to envelop The Quarters. Concealed by the shadows of darkness. he slithered along the side of the duplex. Breaking a window, T-Low entered the dwelling and was all of a sudden, staring at a gold mine.

“It’s like manna falling from the heavens!” He whispered, gazing at the closet full of duffel bags. Hurriedly, he slung a duffel bag across each shoulder then reached back inside the closet to fill each hand.

T-Low’s escape route exchanged the broken window for the back door. Running towards the tree line, greed defeated common sense. Instead of being satisfied with his stolen bounty, he disposed his load in a grouping of young pines and racked back into the duplex.

Eight duffel bags impeded his progress as he waddled in the direction of the tree line. Tired and out of breath, T-Low fizzled out in the shadows created by the underbrush while in the process of contemplating a third trip.

Car lights momentarily illuminated the woods camouflaging his presence. The lights died as the car pulled into the driveway of the safe house. With his mind being made up by outside influences, T-Low slunk deeper into the woods.

Without further delay, he transferred the bills of one duffel bag into another until his bag load became six. Finding a safe place, T-Low buried four of the duffel bags along with the life he’d previously known.

Lounging on a comfortable seat of a Greyhound bus, T-Low glanced over at the two duffel bags resting on the seat next to him. Imagining the green bills inside, he quickly admitted that they looked better occupying the seat than Chantel would have.

It took five days of transferring buses and sleeping in countless bus terminals for T-Low to arrive at his destination. Stepping from the last Greyhound bus that he’d swore he’d ever ride, T-Low stretched and gawked at the high-rise buildings surrounding him. “New York City.” he said, blending into the throng of people hustling along the crowded sidewalk.

“The Big Apple.” T-Low gazed around, mesmerized.

He didn’t know why he’d chosen New York. He was there now, carrying all it would take to insure the transition to city life would go smoothly. All he had was money, and lots of it.

T-Low hadn’t had the opportunity to count his newfound treasures. All he knew was that a lot of dead faces peered back at him whenever he’d risked a quick look in the bags. What made things even better was he had access to four more bags full of these dude’s relatives. Eager to take a long hot shower and get better acquainted with his stolen loot, T-Low flagged a taxi down on the corner of 125th Street and Fifth Avenue.
